In 2002 I was shooting with a Canon Powershot G2. This 4 megapixel camera was, at the time, a “high-end” point and shoot. Better than most 2002 point and shoot digitals, but still a point and shoot. To keep the noise down, I would have to shoot on ISO 50. In the studio, even with really bright lights, this would often mean a tripod and 1/10 second exposure. And a very steady model. The autofocus was also poor in low light situations. I would often resort to manual focus, which meant zooming on in the LCD screen and using buttons on the camera to focus. Lots of blurry and out-of-focus shots in my collection from those days…
I think those early technical challenges really forced me to develop good technique. Eight years later I’m often amazed at the quality of images I made with such limited equipment.
