In early 2004 I graduated from point and shoot digitals to my first digital SLR camera. My wife was pregnant, so I had a good excuse for the $1200 upgrade to the Canon EOS Digital Rebel. (When justifying expensive camera upgrades it helps to have an important family event looming on the horizon. Kids work great for this, but marriages, graduations, and family reunions can also be skillfully employed to convince your significant other that a new [insert photographic gadget] is a must-have.)
The Rebel opened a whole new world for my photography. I started with the 18mm-55mm kit lens, and also purchased a 90mm-300mm. Both were low-end Canon EF lenses, but served my purposes well. I also bought a Sigma 24mm-200mm which turned out to be terrible. It wasn’t very sharp, and seems to compress images vertically on the wide end of the lens. I ended up selling the Sigma and have pretty much stuck with Canon glass since then.
