In 2007 I continued to shoot with the Canon EOS 30D and the EF-S 17mm-55mm f/2.8 IS USM. The 17-55 was my only lens for a few months. Later in the year I purchased the EF 70mm-200mm f/2.8L IS USM. I’d learned the value of fast lenses, and resolved to never buy slow, variable aperture zooms again.
In 2007 I started an equipment arms race of sorts. Between 2007 and 2010 I bought 7 new lenses and 3 new cameras. But my photos didn’t get any better at all. In fact, I think they got worse. Somehow I lost focus and started thinking more about the gear, and less about everything else.
Better gear does not make better photos. It just removes technical obstacles. But 21 megapixels of a poorly composed, poorly conceived concept is still crap. It’s just big crap.
